Make That Bathroom Remodel Go Smoothly

Bathroom Remodeling Project

Are you considering doing a bathroom makeover?  Here are just a few things you will want to keep in mind to make sure your project goes as planned.

IT IS EXTREMELY EASY TO GO OVER BUDGET.

Even though this is one of those “uh…duh” tips, it’s still a very important one to include! Know when you start your bathroom remodel that you will need to stay somewhat fluid in your design plan and be able to make changes as glitches and expenses arise. Make sure that you have an allowance in your budget for those unexpected occurrences because the one thing you can count on in almost any bathroom remodel is the unexpected glitch!

CONTRACTOR COSTS VARIES GREATLY SO SHOP AROUND.

All remodeling contractors are not created equal. I not a bad idea to get at least three quotes on a bathroom remodel.  Once you have them decide which one will actually give you the best work for the best price with the least amount of problems.  Sometimes it is worth it to go with a higher-priced contractor. In the most expensive scenario, you could be doing very little work, subcontractors would be hired for their expertise in installing each element, and nearly everything would be taken care of for you. A higher-priced contractor might source and deliver all materials and manage the entire project from start to finish.  However, if that is not within your budget and you are able to do some of the work yourself you could choose the most affordable contractor. Regardless, chose the one you feel you can work well with, which brings me to my next point!

CHOOSE A CONTRACTOR YOU TRUST AND ARE ABLE TO WORK WITH.

Remodeling any room in your home can really stink. It’s expensive, messy, invasive, stressful, time-consuming,  noisy,  and terribly inconvenient. Depending on how big the job is, you could have strangers in your home for over a month. Be sure to assess just how much stress your family is able to endure before starting a remodel.  There will probably be chaos before it becomes beautiful. Choosing a contractor you like can go a long way when you run into problems.

If your contractor is going to be doing all the tasks involved in your bathroom remodel chances are very good he/she will be better at some of those tasks than they are at others. Make sure to check references, look at pictures of prior work, and do your research before signing a contract! If you run into trouble along the way, insist on hiring a subcontractor for the more difficult jobs.

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIALS WISELY.

Cement tiles are trending big time right now. That being said, cement tiles tend to be costly, more difficult to install, and will need to be resealed every few years. They tend to get dirtier faster than say a glossy ceramic tile and will probably need to be pampered a bit.  Things that are a trend could end up looking very dated in the future. But honestly, most tile will look a little dated after a decade so I say go with what you love!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT ADDING STORAGE!

If right now you have a room in your home that you just can’t seem to keep tidy no matter what you try, chances are pretty good that your current storage and organization system is simply inadequate. Design and function MUST work together! You could start hating that cute vanity that you fell in love with if it’s constantly cluttered with face wash and shaving cream because it’s too inconvenient to get in and out of.

Consider those areas of your current bathroom that don’t work for you and how you can remedy the problem. For some, a double vanity with middle drawers and under sink shelves could make a world of difference!
